The Role of Young People and Digital Innovations in Promoting Good Environmental Governance: The Case of Ghana

Notwithstanding, efforts been made by the Government, the active inclusion of young people as relevant actors is abysmal. There have been very little efforts in actively including young people as relevant actors in the promotion of good environmental governance. Similarly, there is no mention or policy strategy on how the huge untapped potentials of digital innovations and technologies can be utilised to promote good/better environmental governance.

How could digital technologies provide a solution to this challenge?

  1. Establish digital innovation labs: To encourage the use of big data, social media, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create innovative solutions to promote good/better environmental governance.

  2. Increase the role and contribution of big data, social media, the IoT, and AI in facilitating the change towards good/better environmental governance

Actually, with one of the blog link posted by Charles's, I explored regarding Internet governance forum and youth involvement. Data said not available in Africa. Every year, one country will be targeted in the conference. But we are not sure of any update on this.

What do you want to study in particular from the big data? Is it related to health care or economic growth? Can you please give little more details on this, Cyril?

What role do you see the digital innovation lab playing to promote good environmental governance?

The digital innovation lab enables the use of devices and cutting-edge technologies to design, development and launch solutions that promote good environmental governance. Example, blockchain could help address environmental governance challenges by offering a secure and
verifiable record of who exchanges what with whom and who has what at a given time.
• Blockchain could be used to reinforce entitlements to use a natural resource, substantiate claims of reduced environmental impact and incentivise environmentally sustainable actions.
• There are key challenges to be addressed if blockchain is to work in the environmental sector, which include a lack of access to digital infrastructure among poorer and often rural communities, who are the stewards of many natural resources and environmental services.
• To realise more of the potential benefits of blockchain for environmental sustainability:
• governments in poorer countries will need to invest in innovation and digital infrastructure to ensure their citizens can engage with and shape the opportunities that blockchain can create
• governments in wealthier countries will need to support these efforts, and encourage innovation in less energy intensive blockchain technology
• firms will need to support innovators in low- and middle-income countries, and target and tailor blockchain solutions to environmental sustainability problems that the technology can
really address.

Thanks Cyril for educating me. Infrastructure need to be put in place in rural and urban areas to ensure everyone is brought on board approximately the same time.

I think the youth have to demonstrate their digital relevance. I see this happening in Nigeria and many of our political elites are engaging them down to organisations.

For instance in the agriculture sector: Digital innovations are bringing youth back to agriculture: http://www.fao.org/fao-stories/article/en/c/1149534/

There has been a massive drive for youth to return back to farming and the digital tools listed will play important roles
